Kabara was on trial for making remarks that would have been considered blasphemous against the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), an act that could have disturbed the calm of the community. In July 2021, Abduljabbar was charged by the Kano State administration.
Embargoed Abduljabbar, who appeared in court for a final decision in his 15-month trial, was as composed as ever up until the Judge made his final statement. He was sitting in a chair, at ease, counting the beads on his rosary with his fingers (supplicating), and paying close attention.
Abduljabbar spoke up, saying that the lawyer was a stranger to him and that this was his first encounter with him.
“I don’t know him. This is the first time I am seeing him. He should not be allowed to speak on my behalf. I can and should be allowed to speak for myself,”
he said.
The judge did note that the attorney is acknowledged by the court as the defense attorney.
Abduljabbar went on:
“My lord, after I heard how you twisted all my evidence, you turned around all my submissions upside down, you have assigned words to me that I have never uttered.
“Deliver your judgement, and I am not asking for leniency at all. I want all my followers to know that I will die a hero and I don’t want you (the Judge) Ibrahim Sarki Yola to do me any favour or grant me leniency. This is my last word. Assalamu Alaikum.”
After being found guilty of making lewd remarks to the Prophet Muhammad, Sheikh Abduljabar Nasiru Kabara was given a death by hanging sentence by the High Court of Islamic Law in Kano State.
After Judge Ibrahim Sarki Yola stated that all of the crimes for which he was accused had been discovered, the decision was made on Thursday.
One of the charges against him is that the riots in Kano state could be sparked by his preaching.
Justice Sarki Yola postponed the court session after he was found guilty of the offenses so that he could draft the punishment that would be delivered to the teacher.
The court session eventually resumed, and a decision was reached.
However, Sheikh Abduljabar Nasiru Kabara gave his final address before leaving for vacation as read earlier on in which he claimed that the defense attorney does not know him and is not pleading for mercy because, in his opinion, he has not committed a crime and should therefore be punished as quickly as possible.
The teacher was charged by the Kano state administration on Friday, July 16, 2021 with blasphemy against religion and agitating the public, both of which he has consistently denied.
