Morocco is at it again, as they knocked Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal out of the World Cup.

The Atlas Lions made history by being the first country from Africa to advance to the World Cup semifinals.

Following its round-of-16 victory over Portugal's Iberian neighbors, Spain, on penalties, Morocco entered the match with complete confidence.

Walid Regragui's team, however, got off to a slow start as Portugal dominated possession. After Joao Felix was assisted by Bruno Fernandes' free kick, Fernando Santos' team had their first opportunity of the match.

Yassine Bono, the Moroccan player who stood up against Spain, did an outstanding job of deflecting the Atletico Madrid player's header for a corner.

With a few half-chances falling into Felix's half-path, Portugal continued to control possession. But once more, the 23-year-old was unable to make a solid connection. When Morocco, who had been dangerous on the break, took the lead against the flow of play in the 42nd minute through El-Nesyri, the Selecao would later rue those wasted opportunities.

Although Diogo Costa should have done better, the Sevilla forward sent Moroccan fans into a frenzy after he headed home a cross from Yahia Attiyat Allah.

Fernandes of Manchester United nearly gave Portugal a quick response, but his ambitious attempt could only strike the crossbar.

Morocco had the advantage going into halftime, but Portugal started the second half attacking. Just a few minutes after the break, Santos responded by inserting Cristiano Ronaldo and Joao Cancelo.

Portugal put pressure on Morocco, but Morocco resolutely defended, forcing the 2016 European Champions to settle for outside attempts.

However, Santos' team came close to tying the score through Felix, who was again brilliantly stopped by Bono in the Moroccan goal.

As time was running out, Morocco was down to ten men after Walid Cheddira was dismissed for a second bookable offense, giving Portugal a chance to save the match.

The Atlas Lions, however, held off late pressure from Portugal to reserve their spot in the World Cup semifinal, where they will play either France or England.

Cristiano Ronaldo hoped, as this is his last chance to win the World Cup. But unfortunately, they were knocked out. The Portuguese player was in tears as the match came to an end. This marks the end of a journey for Cristiano Ronaldo and a new record for the whole of Africa as the first African country to reach the World Cup semifinals.
