At the World Cup 2022, despite losing to Cameroon, Brazil nevertheless won Group G, while Cameroon was eliminated despite Vincent Aboubakar's late victory.
Aboubakar made an incredible header two minutes into extra time to break the score, just as it seemed as though Cameroon had run out of time to keep their dreams of progressing alive. Serbia needed to score against Switzerland for the African team to win, but the Swiss held on to win 3-2 to take second place in the section behind Brazil.
With Antony and Rodrygo rushing the Cameroon defense and Gabriel Martinelli, making his first international start, forcing Devis Epassy to tip over his firm header from Fred's cross, Brazil's lineup, despite its many changes, still had plenty of attacking talent.
However, before the break, Brazil's chances were mostly limited, with Cameroon having the game's most obvious opportunity. Having created space on the left side, Moumi Ngamaleu crossed the ball for Bryan Mbeumo to attack at the far post. Ederson dived to his right to block Mbeumo's fierce downward header.
Soon after the restart, Aboubakar swung a shot across goal, but Epassy was soon in the thick of the action, tipping over another Martinelli shot, pushing it over, then spilling Eder Militao's shot and recovering to turn the ball behind.
Brazil kept up the pressure as they tried to make it three wins in a row, but Cameroon kept holding them back with a combination of willpower and good fortune. They needed more, though, and just as it appeared they might fall short, Jerome Ngom Mbekeli sent a precise cross from the right that was finished by Aboubakar with a well placed header into Ederson's lower corner. Aboubakar was sent off after his goal because he removed his shirt and was already booked in the game before the moment. Despite the scenario, he took pleasure in his victory.
Cameroon are sadly out of the competition, but they have become the first team to beat Brazil in a World Cup group game since way back in 1998.Their 17-game unbeaten run comes to an end.
With Brazil's chances now hanging in the balance, Martinelli and Bruno Guimaraes gave it their all in the last minutes but were unable to capitalize on golden opportunities. However, it didn't matter because Cameroon advanced to the round of 16 on the strength of a memorable victory over their opponents, who will play South Korea.
